What Type of Massage is Best for You? Here’s What You Should Consider.

chiropractor wilmington ncOnce upon a time, people thought about massage as a luxury—a service available only to well-to-do clients at luxury spas or elite sports clubs. These days, though, you can find massage offered in the workplace, in airports, in hospitals, and in health clinics. The benefits of massage have been so well-established through research that your medical doctor or chiropractor may even refer you to a massage therapist as an integral part of their overall treatment plans. Massage has been found to be beneficial for treating anxiety, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, digestive disorders, insomnia related to stress and a wide range of soft tissue injuries, including those caused by auto, work and sports accidents. And that’s a conservative list. Besides, massage feels good. So what do you need to know about massage before having one?

Some Basic Facts About Massage

Massage is a very general term for rubbing, pressing, kneading, and manipulating your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin for health-related reasons. Many massage therapists use only their hands and fingers for massage, but others may perform specialized forms of massage that use their forearms, elbows, or even their feet. The force used during the massage can vary from light stroking to deep pressure. There are many styles of massage, including:

  • Swedish Massage – This gentle form of massage uses long strokes and kneading, deep circular movements, tapping, and vibration to relax and energize the patient. It is an effective way to relax after a long, stressful week, but research indicates it has health value as well because it reduces the stress hormone cortisol and improves your immune system performance.
  • Deep Tissue Massage – This massage type is considered best for relieving deep knots in the muscles and freeing up trapped tissue structures that may be restricting movement, so if you’re looking for a calm, relaxing massage, this type should probably not be your first choice. The masseur applies deep pressure to dig deep into muscles to release trigger points and improve mobility.
  • Sports Massage – Masseurs who specialize in sports massage can help you heal from sports-related injuries or actually improve your sports performance.
  • Trigger Point Massage – This form of massage focuses on identifying and releasing areas of tightly bound muscle fibers that can form in your body after injury or overexertion.
  • Shiatsu Massage – This type of massage comes from Japan, where the title means “finger pressure.” True to its name, practitioners of this type of massage barely touch the patient, applying gentle pressure to areas considered pressure points or “tsubo,” with the goal of promoting natural healing and improving energy flow.

There are many other specialized types of massage, of course, but the above list covers most general types. As for what you should look for in a massage therapist, the magic words are qualifications and communication. The process for licensing, registering, or certifying massage therapists varies from city to city and state to state, but your prospective massage therapist should be proud to tell you about their training, credentials and experience. Similarly, they should be forthcoming about their approach and willing to offer references from other patients or clients.

Naturally, any massage therapist you are considering should also welcome practical questions such as “How many sessions do you think I will need?” and “How much will it cost, and is it covered by my health insurance?” One of the best ways to find a good massage therapist is to ask your chiropractor. Doctors of chiropractic often work in conjunction with highly-qualified massage therapists, and thus can refer you to professionals whose work they trust.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care in the Workplace: What Managers Should Know

It can be really tough owning or managing a business. Not only do you have to worry about making a profit, you also have to look after the welfare of your most important resource, your employees. Your business, after all, is dependent on them being healthy enough to come to work, and to work productively while they’re there. So most businesses these days view their employee healthcare costs as an investment, a way of keeping the company healthy by keeping employees healthy. The challenge for managers is how to keep these healthcare costs as low as possible.

With this in mind, the findings of a recent study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine are encouraging, because they suggest that one way to enhance your employees’ wellness while reducing costs is to offer on-site chiropractic care.

How on-site chiropractic care lowered several companies’ health care costs

In the study, conducted between 2010 and 2012, the cost of care was tracked for 1,635 employees who received chiropractic care. About half of the employees received their care from off-site providers, while the other half received treatment from chiropractic offices established on-site, in the workplace itself. The company was willing to make this investment in chiropractic care because it has been shown to deliver effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions, which are the primary cause of disability in the workplace.

The researchers found that, while both groups of workers received chiropractic care, the on-site group required fewer visits than the group traveling to off-site chiropractors. The on-site group also required fewer expensive diagnostic imaging tests (38% on-site vs. 56% off-site) and X-rays (27% on-site vs. 46% off-site). The off-site group required more office visits for treatment and physical therapy than the on-site group, and they also logged more visits to the emergency room. As a result, the study authors reported that chiropractic care “demonstrated significant improvements in headache, neck pain, and low back pain functional status in patients utilizing on-site services over a short time frame while still showing lower utilization and cost outcomes than community-based care,” and that “This study demonstrates that users of on-site chiropractic services have lower health care utilization than those who obtain their care at off-site community care centers.”

In a similar study at Anheuser-Busch brewing company in Peoria, IL, on-site chiropractic care provided in workplace wellness centers significantly improved care for workers who spend most of their time moving heavy cases and kegs of beer. Study authors reported that “In the two years since it was implemented, the number of employee sick days has declined by 22 percent, while the accident rate has been cut in half. Consequently, the company’s workers’ compensation costs have experienced a dramatic reduction, with premiums declining by more than 25 percent.”

These and other studies make a clear case for the establishment of on-site chiropractic clinics in workplaces because it provides employees more convenient access to safe, effective care for musculoskeletal conditions. Since it reduces employees’ pain and disability, it improves both their productivity and their job satisfaction. Plus it leads to lower overall healthcare costs for the company in the long run. In short, providing on-site chiropractic services has been found to benefit the workforce as well as employers in a variety of important ways—it’s a “win-win” investment for companies looking to improve productivity and reduce expenses.

Chiropractic Treatments for Lower Back Pain

It’s not news that millions of Americans suffer from lower back pain. But, what many people may find surprising is that a significant number of these people may be able to achieve lasting relief without medicines or surgeries. For many, a few visits to a back pain chiropractor might be all that’s needed to reduce or eliminate their pain.

How a Misaligned Spine Can Cause Back Pain

Chiropractic treatments have been proven effective for helping people manage their back pain because many of these problems arise from spines that are out of alignment. When your spine is out of alignment, it causes certain muscles to work overtime in order to maintain your body’s balance and stability. In more severe cases, the spine might be so far out of alignment that it may be pinching nerves, resulting in even greater pain.

By aligning the spine, these muscles will gradually be re-educated to work as they’re intended and pressure on the nerves will be released. This will also allow more blood to flow into the area, bringing healing oxygen with it, while at the same time removing pain-causing toxins that might have built up in the area. This is the body’s natural self-healing process at work.

What is the Usual Course of Treatment for Low Back Pain?

The first step a chiropractor does is review the patient’s medical history and perform a thorough physical examination. Depending on the situation, diagnostic imaging or lab tests may be ordered to determine whether or not chiropractic care is the appropriate form of treatment or if there is a more serious health problem that’s causing the pain.

The back pain chiropractor will then devise a treatment plan that includes manual adjustments, massage, at-home exercise, electrical stimulation, hot and cold therapy, rehabilitation (if necessary), and in some cases, nutritional counseling.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Treatments for Back Pain

Chiropractic treatments have been proven to be a safe treatment option for those looking for holistic, drug-free low back pain relief. When applied properly, chiropractic manipulation can leave you feeling a little sore, but over time, the soreness will go away and you’ll start feeling less pain and more flexibility, mobility, and better in general.

It is important to note that treating low back pain typically involves a series of visits to the chiropractor in order for the pain to be alleviated for the long term. When the spine has been out of alignment for a period of time, this will become its new norm, so it needs to be re-adjusted on a regular basis until it is re-educated.

Who Should Not See a Chiropractor for Low Back Pain?

Even though manual manipulation is safe and effective, it is not ideal for every person suffering from low back pain. In particular, people who are suffering from osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or who are taking blood-thinning medications should not undergo chiropractic treatments.

Back or Neck Pain? Chiropractic Can Help!

back pain chiropractorPeople who suffer from long-term neck or back pain Wilmington NC are often frustrated by the lack of treatment options available from their traditional healthcare providers. All too often, conventional treatments range from ineffective medications to dangerous surgeries, both of which offer more risks than results. As a result, it’s no surprise that so many back and neck pain sufferers turn to alternative treatments like chiropractic care for relief.

Three Out of Four Back Pain Sufferers Turn to Alternative Therapies

In a recent study performed and published by Consumer Reports, 45,601 of the magazine’s subscribers responded to a questionnaire regarding alternative therapy. As it turned out, three out of four people responded as having used some type of alternative therapy to treat their health issues.

It was also estimated that during the time the survey was being conducted, more than 38 million Americans made over 300 million visits to chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and other alternative medicine and holistic practitioners.

One of the most important pieces of information gained by the Consumer Reports study results is that not all alternative therapy options deliver the same level of results when it came to treating the 12 common health problems listed in the study’s questionnaire. More specifically, when it came to back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis, chiropractic care and deep-tissue massage were rated very highly by the respondents. In fact, in the cases of back pain and neck pain, respondents noted significantly more relief through hands-on treatments like chiropractic and massage than through prescription medications. In addition, one in four study respondents felt that their chiropractor was more interested in them and their pain relief, and were more insightful than their medical doctors.

Chiropractic Care Outperforms All Other Back Pain Treatments

The Consumer Reports study results suggests that “Chiropractic outperformed all other back-pain treatments.” By comparison, prescription medication, deep-tissue massage, yoga, and Pilates all delivered similar results, but lacked the effectiveness produced by chiropractic care. Of the study’s respondents who had sought chiropractic care for their back pain, 65% reported that it helped reduce their pain “a lot.” It was also reported that more people suffering from back pain sought treatment from chiropractors than they did medical doctors, and more importantly, the majority of them felt that they benefited from their choice.

The results are similar among neck pain sufferers. Nearly 65% of the study’s respondents who tried chiropractic care for their pain reported that it helped their pain “a lot.” By comparison, prescription pain medications ranked fourth in the ratings with just a 49% satisfaction score.

The Impact of Chiropractic Care on Other Health Conditions

Another impressive fact taken from the Consumer Reports study was that chiropractic care scored high as an effective therapy option for a host of other health conditions besides neck and back pain. Chiropractic care was ranked third as a treatment for allergies, second for treating colds and flu, third for treating fibromyalgia, and third as a headache and migraine treatment.

Look Who Else Uses Chiropractic Care: Water Polo Players

back painAlthough it may not seem like it, water polo is a very physically demanding sport. Its players are required to spend an hour and fifteen minutes in a pool, during which they cover a distance of as much as three kilometers. There is a good deal of physical contact above and below water. In addition, teammates must shoot and pass the ball without the benefit of contact with the ground to help generate force in the upper body.

US Men’s Water Polo Player

The current US Men’s Water Polo team goal keeper, Merrill Moses, attributes much of the team’s success to the benefits they get from chiropractic care and their chiropractor Dr. Terry Schroeder. According to Merrill, “I can honestly say that without chiropractic, many Olympic athletes would not be able to perform to their potential. We take such a pounding on our bodies, especially in water polo, because it’s a contact sport. I like to get a chiropractic adjustment everyday just to keep my body healthy.”

US Olympic Water Polo Team Coach

Dr. Schroeder, coach of the US Olympic Water Polo team, was himself a water polo captain and helped the US win medals in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. In 1998 he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Schroeder says, “Athletes know that the difference between winning and losing can be a matter of fractions. When looking for that edge, chiropractic often makes all the difference.” Schroeder adds, “I believe that chiropractic is going to continue to be of growing importance in the Olympic world.”

Upper body injuries are common among water polo players, particularly rotator cuff injuries and other types of shoulder pain. “Every guy I think on our Olympic team was being adjusted pretty regularly,” said Schroeder. “Some of them were a little bit slower to come on board… but as they saw the other guys kind of respond and said ‘Man my shoulder feels so much better, my neck feels so much better’ – one by one they all said ‘Maybe you can help me out. Maybe I’m going to perform a little better too.’”

Schroeder is continuing in a long chiropractic tradition. His grandfather and father were both chiropractors. “I grew up seeing people arrive at my dad’s office in pain and then watching them come out with a smile,” Schroeder says. “I’ve never taken an aspirin or had a shot. I’ve always had chiropractic care as primary care, and I believe I’m in balance, that my immune system is better for it. I’m not saying there’s no place for surgery, but the body will take care of itself if you let it.”

“Chiropractic has played a huge role in keeping me healthy – I’m the only four-time Olympian in the sport of water polo in the United States.” Schroeder added, “I won two silver medals as an athlete and now I came back with a silver medal as a coach. My gold medal in my life is chiropractic.”

The Unexpected Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Low back and neck pain are the two most common reasons why people seek the help of chiropractors. But, while pain relief might be first and foremost on their minds, few cannot help but be surprised at some of the extra, unexpected benefits they enjoy from targeted spinal manipulations. If you’re thinking about visiting a Wilmington NC back pain specialist at Southeastern chiropractic for back pain, neck pain, extremity pain or numbness, or for any other reason, here are four surprising “side effects” you can enjoy from regular chiropractic treatments.

A Healthier Heart

In a recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers discovered that people who go to the chiropractor enjoy a lower heart rate as a result of an adjustment. And, the benefits are immediate, with the very first treatment. This is exciting news for people who have struggled with both musculoskeletal pain and heart-related issues because by treating the pain at its source, there’s a greater chance that their heart issues can be dramatically improved without costly medications or risky surgeries.

A Healthier Gutwilmington nc back pain

When your digestive system is working right, the rest of your body usually follows suit. But, if you suffer from irritable bowel or some other digestive issue, it can throw your health out of whack. The good news is that recent chiropractic research has revealed that spinal manipulation of the middle and lower back can effectively relieve the pressure being placed on the nerves that are responsible for making sure your digestive organs function properly. As a result, chiropractic care can often result in the patient experiencing fewer digestive problems.

Improved Balance

The older we get, the more important it is for us to maintain, or strengthen, our ability to balance. There are several exercises and balance-based activities you can do to help strengthen your leg muscles and your core, but research has also showed that chiropractic care can also provide benefits to one’s balance. Specifically, chiropractic care helps alleviate the pain and/or dizziness that can be caused by compressed nerves in the neck so you can walk straighter and with greater clarity and confidence.

Improved Reproductive Health

If you have been trying to get pregnant but have thus far been unsuccessful, then the problem could be with the function of your nervous system. And, because chiropractic care’s predominant focus is on enhancing the body’s nervous system, it can be highly effective at helping improve fertility. In fact, the American Pregnancy Association even recommends chiropractic care to women with diminished fertility issues. And, treatment shouldn’t stop once you do get pregnant because chiropractic care can provide a host of other benefits to expectant mothers, like reducing nausea symptoms, relieving back and neck pain, reducing the duration of labor and delivery, and reducing the chances of a potential cesarean delivery.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that can affect anyone at any age, although it is more commonly found in women than men. It occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed at the point where it enters the wrist. For sufferers of carpal tunnel, it can be extremely painful and often debilitating.

But, it’s important to note that not all hand or wrist pain is carpal tunnel syndrome. The median nerve that so commonly gets compressed in the wrist actually travels from the neck all the way down the arm, so should the nerve be compressed anywhere along that trek, it can produce the numb, tingling sensation so commonly associated with carpal tunnel. In fact, pain and tingling in the hand can be attributed to several possible causes, including tendonitis, ulnar neuropathy, and even DeQuervain’s disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The first step toward being diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome is being able to identify its most common signs and symptoms. In the majority of cases, this includes tingling or numbness in the hands, pain in the wrist, and weakness in the hands. When someone has carpal tunnel syndrome, they usually have a tendency to drop objects.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

While there is no definitive cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, the condition is associated with certain risk factors. These include:

  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Anatomic factors (fractured wrist or dislocation)
  • Nerve-damaging illnesses
  • Pregnancy
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Obesity
  • Menopause
  • Kidney failure
  • Work-related factors

But, these are usually the exceptions to the rule. The vast majority of cases are caused by problems in the patient’s musculoskeletal system.

How Can a Chiropractor Help Relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

In traditional medicine, carpal tunnel syndrome is treated through a surgical procedure. But, in 75% of cases, the carpal tunnel symptoms tend to return within two years. Chiropractors provide a non-invasive treatment option that provides longer lasting relief without the costs and risks associated with anesthesia and surgery.

Recent studies have indicated that for many carpal tunnel sufferers, their pain actually stems from problems elsewhere in their bodies. Quite often, it is due to misaligned bones, ligaments, or muscles in the neck. Chiropractors are especially trained on treating musculoskeletal disorders and modern chiropractic care has shown to be highly effective at bringing lasting relief for many carpal tunnel patients.

5 Reasons to See an Auto Accident Chiropractor in Wilmington NC After an Accident

An auto accident can be extremely jarring to the body and in many cases, an injury doesn’t present itself until days after the event. All too often, conditions like whiplash only show up after the adrenaline rush caused by the accident starts to fade and the body relaxes.Because most auto accident injuries involve the spine, it makes sense that a chiropractor should be one of the first treatment options an accident victim chooses, but too often, it’s not. And as a result, the individual winds up living a lifetime with days filled with chronic pain and stiffness. If you have been in a recent accident, here are five reasons why you should schedule an appointment with our auto accident chiropractor Wilmington NC as soon as possible.

#1: Your Insurance Will Cover the Visit

Today, chiropractic care is covered under most health insurance plans. You may need to get a referral from your primary, but once you do, all you’ll have to pay is your copay (if you have one). Even if your health insurance doesn’t cover the treatment, there’s a good chance your auto insurance will. Talk to both before you schedule your visit so you know exactly what your policies cover and what they don’t.

#2: Chiropractic Care is Safe

Chiropractic care, when administered by a licensed professional, is an extremely low-risk treatment option. In fact, it is much, much safer than western medicine treatments, which often result in dangerously addictive drugs and risky surgeries. Chiropractic care is a 100% natural and noninvasive medical treatment.

#3: No Side Effects to Worry About

Most chemically compounded medications have side effects attached to them. These can range from stomach upset to a host of other, more serious problems. Chiropractic care, on the other hand, is a manual therapeutic treatment that does not involve the use of drugs. Western medicine providers prescribe painkillers (OTC or prescription), and while they may provide temporary relief from the pain, they just cover it up. They don’t actually solve the problem. Chiropractic care treats the root cause of the pain so more effective, long-lasting pain relief can be obtained.

#4: Western Medicine Might Miss the Injury

Unlike western medicine medical practitioners, chiropractors are trained extensively in the musculoskeletal system. Western medicine relies mostly on x-rays when diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries, so soft tissue injuries can easily be missed, especially if the patient is not complaining about having a great deal of pain at the time. In such cases, it takes a trained eye to find a soft tissue injury following an auto accident and a chiropractor can often identify them more effectively simply because they have received specialized training in diagnosing spinal injuries and misalignments.

#5: Chiropractic Treatments are Non-Invasive

When you visit an auto accident chiropractor in Wilmington NC, you don’t have to worry about being poked, prodded, or undergoing surgery. Chiropractic care is non-invasive, so you’ll never be uncomfortable under your chiropractor’s care. In fact, you might just feel a world of relief after just one visit!

Seeing the Chiropractor in the Winter

Winter is a busy time for chiropractor Wilmington NC. Even though we don’t get a lot of snow in the area, there are still plenty of chances to be had for sustaining injuries during this season. From lifting heavy Christmas trees to slips and falls on slippery surfaces to ice skating accidents and more, the winter season offers plenty of potential for suffering neck and back pains. But, did you know that targeted chiropractic care can even help you manage some of the season’s other health risks, like colds, flus, general aches and pains, and even winter depression?

How Chiropractic Care Helps Prevent Colds and Flus

Winter is synonymous with the holidays, but it is also known as cold and flu season. But, contrary to common belief, the upswing in illnesses has nothing to do with the chillier temperatures or the wet weather outside. For the vast majority of cold and flu cases, the illnesses can be attributed to the patient’s nervous system and their body’s white blood cell production. Both of these can be seriously impacted when the spine is out of alignment.

By going to the chiropractor regularly in the winter, any subluxations that exist in the spine will be cleared, thus making the nervous system better capable of fighting off illnesses like colds and the flu. Studies have even shown that the body’s production of white blood cells can be boosted simply by receiving chiropractic adjustments and this alone will help you combat illnesses all throughout the year.

Have Winter Aches and Pains? Chiropractor Wilmington NC Treatments Can Help

The winter cold and dampness can cause those with arthritis and other joint issues to experience morning stiffness, aches, and all-day generalized pain. But, going to the chiropractor can help these patients find relief because chiropractic treatments allow blood and oxygen back into problem areas. This helps heal tissue, lubricate the joints, and improve overall mobility. And, the pain relief comes without using risky pain medications or undergoing any dangerous surgeries or procedures.

Fight Winter Depression with Chiropractic Care

There’s a reason so many people suffer from what is known as the “winter blues.” The longer evenings and loneliness that comes with being inside more often leads to a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. And, those with compromised nervous symptoms are especially at risk for this condition because they aren’t able to effectively deal with their feelings of solitude. But, by seeing a chiropractor for regular adjustments in the winter, your nervous system will be less restricted and better able to communicate with the brain, thus helping you to manage your emotions and deal with depression or depression-like symptoms during this time of year.

Southeastern’s Chiropractor Wilmington NC Can Help You Stay Healthy This Winter

This winter, keep your spine in alignment and enjoy better health and less pain. Routine chiropractic treatments can be your most important ally in your fight to avoid colds and flus this season, and you’ll finally be able to say goodbye to morning stiffness and pain.

Best Stretches for Back Pain

If you live everyday with chronic back pain, then you should schedule a consultation visit with a chiropractor back pain so you can be treated by someone skilled in this area. But, if you have pain but are still able to perform your daily routine, then there are some stretches you can do to help soothe the pain naturally by easing the muscle tension and strain in the problematic area.

Here are seven of the best stretches you can do for back pain. Practice them daily and you’ll notice your mobility will improve and your pain will decrease.

The Child’s Pose

The Child’s Pose is an easy stretch that involves hardly any moving. To do this stretch, you will start by positioning yourself on the floor (preferably on a yoga mat) on your hands and knees with your knees just wider than hip distance apart. Next, turn your toes inward until they touch and push your hips backwards bending your knees.

Once you obtain a comfortable “seated” position, extend your arms forward and let your head to naturally fall forward into a relaxed position. Slowly repeat the stretch 4 or 5 times.

Modified Cobra

The Modified Cobra is a popular stretch in yoga. To do this stretch, you will lie face down on your yoga mat with your body fully extended. Bend your elbows and put your hands flat on the ground where they are even with your chest. Next, you will press your hands down on the floor and raise your head and upper body while keeping your pelvis flat on the floor. Keep your arms fully extended and hold this position for approximately 10 seconds, then relax. Slowly repeat the stretch 4 or 5 times.

 Lumbar Rotation

This is an excellent stretch to help limber up the lumbar. To do it, you lay flat on back with your legs bent at a 90-degree angle and both knees together. Next, you will slowly rotate both knees in the same direction towards to ground while keeping your back or feet on the ground. When you start feeling tension in your lumber, stop and hold the stretch for 10 to 20 seconds and then slowly return to the starting position and repeat the stretch to the opposite side of your body. Continue alternating 4 or 5 times.

Supine Hip Flexor

To do this stretch, you will have to lay flat on your back on a bed or other elevated structure, like a weight lifting bench. Hang one leg off the structure without flexing it. Bend the other leg, grab the knee, and gently pull it up toward your chest. Hold the leg for 10 to 20 seconds and then release. Repeat the stretch with the opposite leg and continue alternating legs 4 or 5 times.

Knee to Chest

This stretch is exactly the same as the Supine Hip Flexor stretch with the exception that it is performed while lying flat on your back with your legs out straight, pulling one up at a time just as in the instructions above.

Glute Stretch

To stretch your glutes, you will start by lying on your back with both feet flat on the floor and both knees bent. Pull your right leg leg up and rest its ankle over the knee of your left leg. Then, pull your left thigh toward your chest and hold the position for 10 to 20 seconds. Repeat the stretch on the other leg and then alternate legs 4 or 5 times.

Hamstring Stretch

Stretching your hamstring might not seem like it has any benefit to your back, but it really does help loosen up the lumbar. To do this stretch, lay flat on your back and interlock the fingers of both hands under the hamstring of one leg. Keep the leg as straight as possible and slowly lift it (without bending at the knee) until tension is felt. When doing this stretch properly, you should feel tension, but never discomfort or pain. Hold the stretch for 10 to 20 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg, alternating legs for 4 or 5 times.
